Supreme Court Collegium Interviews 54 High Court Judge Candidates In 2 Days To Fill 371 Vacant Posts Across India

NEW DELHI: In the last two days, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai along with Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, met and interviewed 54 candidates who are being considered for appointment as judges in various High Courts across India.

The interviews began on Tuesday, July 1, and are part of an effort to fill vacant judge positions in High Courts such as Madhya Pradesh, Patna, Allahabad, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gauhati, and Delhi.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Collegium interacted with 20 candidates on the first day and 34 on the second. These interviews are being done to carefully understand the background, skills, and suitability of each candidate.

This time, the Collegium is taking a more detailed and serious approach in selecting judges. Some candidates were interviewed for up to half an hour when a deeper assessment was necessary, while others had shorter discussions depending on the need.

Supreme Court Collegium Gets Tough Under CJI Gavai: Judge Selection Now Under Intense Scrutiny Amid Cash Scandal

This change in the Collegium’s approach comes after recent controversies in the judicial system. One issue involved Justice Yashwant Varma and allegations related to unaccounted cash found at his residence. Another involved Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court, who made remarks that attracted public criticism for being offensive to the Muslim community.

Due to these developments, the Collegium is now being extra cautious and thorough to ensure only deserving and credible candidates are chosen for these important positions.

As of July 1, there are 371 vacancies in 25 High Courts across the country. The decision to directly meet and assess 54 candidates shows that the Collegium is serious about ensuring transparency and strengthening the credibility of the judiciary.
