The case relates to the sensational Rs 200 crore extortion scam.
Court’s Observation
A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Prashant Kumar Mishra remarked that the practice of litigants rushing to the Supreme Court for early hearings was unacceptable.
“It is not acceptable. Just because of proximity of the Supreme Court, everyone comes here and then seeks adjournment,”
the bench observed.
The bench expressed displeasure at the growing tendency to file pleas before the Supreme Court merely to push for faster listings in high courts.
Lawyer’s Submission
Appearing for Paulose, her counsel argued that although the matter has been listed almost daily before the Delhi High Court, it has not been taken up for hearing. The counsel pointed out that the bail plea was also listed on Wednesday. Based on this submission, the Supreme Court agreed to adjourn the matter.
Background of the Case
Leena Paulose and her husband, Sukesh Chandrashekar, are accused in multiple criminal cases, including one of the largest extortion scandals in recent years. Chandrashekar is accused of duping the wives of former Ranbaxy promoters, Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh, of Rs 200 crore.
The Delhi Police has invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Chandrashekar, Paulose, and other accused persons. Investigators allege that the duo, along with their associates, used hawala routes and created shell companies to park the proceeds of crime.
Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is pursuing separate money laundering charges against them, further complicating their legal troubles.
