The Supreme Court will hear a plea filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo challenging the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act. The Bench fixed January 7 at 2 PM for hearing, stating the matter will be taken up immediately after vacation.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India heard a petition filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo challenging the detention of her husband, well-known climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, under the National Security Act (NSA).

The petition argues that the detention is illegal, unconstitutional, and a direct violation of Sonam Wangchuk’s fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India.

The case has been titled Gitanjali J. Angmo v. Union of India & Ors., registered as W.P.(Crl.) No. 399 of 2025. The matter is being heard by a Bench comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice N.V. Anjaria. Initially, the court indicated that the case would be taken up after fresh matters.

During the hearing, the matter was taken up by the Supreme Court. While addressing the urgency of the case, the Court remarked,

“We are doing our best.”

In response, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing in the matter, replied,

“Your Lorships our doing more than best.”

The Bench then clarified the timeline for hearing the petition and stated,

“We will have it immediately after vacation.”

Responding to this, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court,

“First week is miscellaneous.”

Senior advocate Sibal replied to this submission by saying,

“That even better.”

The Supreme Court thereafter fixed a specific date and time for the hearing and stated clearly,

“We will take up on 7th at 2 PM.”

The petition has drawn national attention due to Sonam Wangchuk’s prominent role in climate activism and the ongoing protests related to environmental and political issues in Ladakh.

The challenge to his detention under the NSA raises significant constitutional questions related to personal liberty, preventive detention laws, and the limits of executive power.

The case is being closely followed as it involves issues of public importance, fundamental rights, and the legality of using national security laws against activists. The Supreme Court’s decision to take up the matter on a fixed date reflects the seriousness of the allegations raised in the petition.

The hearing scheduled for the 7th at 2 PM is expected to further clarify the court’s stand on the constitutional validity of the detention and the legal safeguards available under preventive detention laws.
