New Delhi: During the hearing of the case involving Advocate Charanjeet Singh Chanderpal, the Supreme Court witnessed disruptions, leading the court to call on lawyers to uphold decorum, reminding the bar that sessions are live-streamed for public viewing.

The bench, led by Justice Surya Kant, highlighted the necessity of maintaining professional conduct to uphold the dignity of the judiciary.

Addressing the disruptive behavior, the court remarked,

“If all of you behave like this, don’t you realize this is being live-streamed? These proceedings are in the public domain. What kind of impression does this behavior create for the public? You are all officers of the court!”

The court also pointed out the need for improved training for lawyers, commenting on the declining standards of courtroom decorum. Referring to a lawyer with seven years of experience, the court admonished,

“In seven years, this is what you have learned? Interrupting with so-called arguments in the most disgraceful manner! Is this how you address the Supreme Court of India?”

The bench warned of serious repercussions for such conduct, including the potential suspension of licenses,

“Even now, you show no remorse. You seem to think you are above the law! If we lost our temper, imagine the consequences. There must be decorum maintained in the Supreme Court of India!”

Although the court ultimately adjourned the session, it indicated that future hearings would address possible disciplinary actions. Justice Surya Kant expressed concern over the misuse of legal authority and stressed the importance of accountability.

The Supreme Court’s stern statements serve as a reminder of the professional standards expected within the nation’s highest judicial institution.

Decorum in court by advocates is essential to maintain the dignity and smooth functioning of the judiciary. Advocates must adhere to the prescribed dress code, ensuring their appearance reflects respect for the court.
