NEW DELHI: Today (8th April): The Supreme Court issued a stay order on the proceedings of a corruption case against Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy until further notice. The decision comes as the top court examines an appeal filed by the minister challenging a Madras High Court order from February 26.
A bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra granted a stay on the proceedings of the corruption case against Minister I Periyasamy. The court acknowledged that it was currently examining the minister’s appeal challenging the Madras High Court’s order. Therefore, it deemed it appropriate to halt the proceedings until a final decision is reached.
The High Court set aside the trial court’s decision to discharge Periyasamy in the corruption case. In response, Periyasamy sought the Supreme Court’s direction to postpone the trial and exempt him from personal appearance in the Chennai court. This stay order halts the proceedings in the case while the apex court reviews the minister’s appeal.
Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy was facing a corruption case that alleged his involvement in graft. However, the trial court had previously discharged him from the case. Aggrieved with this decision, the prosecution approached the Madras High Court, which subsequently set aside the trial court’s order and revived the corruption charges against Periyasamy.
The stay order effectively suspends any further progress in the case until the Supreme Court concludes its review.
