The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition that sought an investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination by central investigative agencies like the ED and CBI.

NEW DELHI: Today (24th June): The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition that sought an investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination by central investigative agencies like the ED and CBI.

Instead, the court instructed the petitioner to present their arguments during the next hearing scheduled for July 8.

Earlier, on June 20, the Supreme Court stayed proceedings on all cases related to purported leaks and malpractices concerning the NEET-UG 2024 exam across multiple High Courts.

A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice SVN Bhatti issued notices to transfer all NEET-related petitions from seven High Courts to the Supreme Court for consolidated consideration on July 8.

Additionally, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) in response to petitions seeking the cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 and a court-monitored probe into alleged irregularities during the medical entrance examination.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court addressed a total of 14 petitions, including 10 filed by 49 students and the ‘Student Federation of India’, with the remaining four submitted by the NTA.

Earlier, on June 19, the Supreme Court declined to intervene in NEET counselling and also rejected a request to direct the CBI to investigate alleged paper leaks and malpractices associated with the exam.

NEET-UG 2024 was conducted on May 5 across 4,750 examination centres, with approximately 24 lakh candidates appearing for the medical entrance test.

The court also addressed allegations of exam centre manipulations, brought forward by one of the petitions filed by two NEET-UG candidates. The petitioners pointed out suspicious patterns in the selection of exam centres by candidates from various states. They noted an unusual number of students from Odisha, Karnataka, and Jharkhand choosing a particular centre in Godhra, Gujarat, raising concerns about the integrity of the examination process.

In total, seven writ petitions were heard by the court regarding the NEET examination. Each petition highlighted various issues and irregularities, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation and corrective measures to maintain the credibility of the examination.
