The Supreme Court of India has issued an official notification inviting online applications from eligible candidates for engagement as Law Clerk-cum-Research Associates for the assignment term 2026–2027.

As per the notification released by the Registry, the recruitment will be carried out under the Scheme for Engaging Law Clerk-cum-Research Associates on Short-Term Contractual Assignment in the Supreme Court of India (January 2024, as amended). Through this process, the Supreme Court will prepare a panel of around 90 candidates who will be engaged purely on a contractual and full-time basis.

The notification clearly states that the engagement is temporary in nature and does not provide any right to regular appointment or permanent service in the Supreme Court. During the period of engagement, selected Law Clerks will not be allowed to practice as an Advocate or take up any other professional assignment in any court or authority.

Candidates selected for the post will receive a fixed consolidated remuneration of Rs 1,00,000 per month. The assignment will cover the judicial term 2026–2027, and the nature of work will involve legal research, drafting assistance, and academic support to the Judges of the Supreme Court.

Regarding eligibility, applicants must be Law Graduates, having completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, or must be appearing in the final year of either the 5-year Integrated Law Course or the 3-year Law Course.

Final-year students are permitted to apply, but they must submit proof of having acquired the law degree at the time of interview or before joining the assignment.

The law degree must be obtained from a college, university, or institution established by law in India and must be recognized by the Bar Council of India for the purpose of enrollment as an Advocate.

In terms of age criteria, candidates must be at least 20 years old and not more than 32 years old as on February 7, 2026, which is the last date for submission of applications.

The notification also highlights the importance of skills required for the role. Applicants must possess strong legal research and analytical abilities, good writing and drafting skills, and working knowledge of computers. Familiarity with legal research platforms such as e-SCR, SCC Online, Manupatra, LexisNexis, and Westlaw is considered essential.

The selection process will consist of a written examination followed by an interview. The written test is tentatively scheduled for March 7, 2026. Based on performance in the written exam and other relevant criteria, the Registry may shortlist candidates for the interview stage.

The Supreme Court Registry also retains the authority to terminate the engagement at any time, subject to the notice requirements prescribed under the scheme.

The online application process begins on January 20, 2026, and the last date to apply is February 7, 2026. Interested and eligible candidates are advised to submit their applications through the official website of the Supreme Court of India, which is sci.gov.in, well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.

This recruitment drive offers a valuable opportunity for young law graduates and final-year law students to gain first-hand exposure to constitutional law, judicial functioning, and legal research at the highest court of the country.
