NEW DELHI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced on Thursday(22nd Aug) that it will file an interlocutory application in the Supreme Court’s suo motu case regarding the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The IMA is also preparing documents to participate in the National Task Force (NTF) established by the court to develop protocols for healthcare professionals’ safety.

The IMA stated in a communication to its officials, including those at state and local branches,

“We will be filing an IA (interlocutory application) before the Honourable Supreme Court in the suo motu case. The headquarters is preparing the required documents to present before the special task force.”

The tragic incident, which occurred in a seminar hall of the state-run hospital, has sparked nationwide protests, disrupting non-emergency medical services across several healthcare facilities.

The Supreme Court, deeming the incident “horrific,” criticized the West Bengal government for delays in filing an FIR and for permitting the hospital to be vandalized.

The IMA, after meetings with Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) in Delhi, confirmed its plan to file the interlocutory application and remain in close coordination with these associations. The IMA has also urged its local branches to engage with MPs to push for central legislation addressing violence against healthcare workers.

The IMA further noted,

“We met with resident doctors’ associations (RDA) in Delhi on Wednesday and shared our assessment of the situation. The IMA stands with the RDAs and will maintain real-time information sharing and frequent consultations.”

Additionally, the IMA has written to Health Minister J P Nadda and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for urgent action on a central law to protect healthcare professionals and designating hospitals as secure zones. Protests led by resident doctors in response to the Kolkata incident have now entered their 11th day, despite the Supreme Court’s appeal for them to return to work.
