Today, On 21st July, The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of student suicides at IIT Kharagpur and Sharda University, observing, “Something is wrong.” The court raised serious concerns over institutional accountability and delays in timely police action and investigation.
The Supreme Court of India criticized the four-day delay in filing a First Information Report (FIR) related to a student suicide at IIT Kharagpur. The Court demanded appearances from IIT officials and police to explain the delay. It reflects growing concerns about student suicides and accountability among educational institutions and authorities.
The Allahabad High Court addressed the misuse of the POCSO Act in cases of teenage love, stating it was meant to protect minors from abuse, not criminalize consensual relationships. Justice Pahal emphasized the importance of considering victims’ statements and highlighted factors leading to bail for an accused teen in a consensual case.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court, led by Justice Achal Kumar Paliwal, granted anticipatory bail to a man accused of raping a teacher under the guise of marriage, citing a lack of prima facie evidence and a long-standing relationship. The court highlighted delays in filing the FIR and the prosecutrix’s background as significant factors.
