Today, On 14th November, The Supreme Court requested a response from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding a plea filed by choreographer Remo D’Souza. This petition raises issues for the state’s consideration, prompting judicial review. The case will now proceed as the court awaits the UP government’s stance. The outcome could influence further legal actions and policy decisions.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a petition filed by renowned choreographer and film director Remo D’Souza, who is seeking to quash a cheating case filed against him in 2016.
Despite D’Souza’s request for interim relief, the court declined to stay ongoing proceedings.
The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, issued a notice to the UP government, setting a hearing for the matter next week.

D’Souza’s plea challenges an Allahabad High Court decision that had earlier dismissed his request to nullify the cheating case. The case stems from an FIR lodged against him under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 386 (extortion involving threats of death or serious injury) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The origins of this case trace back to a complaint filed by a financier who alleged that D’Souza encouraged him to invest in a film project, promising substantial returns.
According to the complainant, D’Souza had assured him that the invested amount would double, which made the venture seem appealing.
However, when D’Souza allegedly failed to fulfill this promise, the financier filed a police complaint, claiming he had been deceived and financially wronged.
The complainant alleges that D’Souza persuaded him to invest in a film project with the promise of doubling the invested amount, which, according to the complaint, D’Souza later failed to repay as assured.
This legal battle could have significant implications for D’Souza and will be further examined in the upcoming hearing.
D’Souza’s case will likely draw attention to the legal frameworks governing financial commitments in entertainment projects and may influence future regulations or industry practices to ensure greater transparency and accountability.
