A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court over a reported breach of protocol during CJI BR Gavai’s visit to Maharashtra. The plea urges the Union Government to take action and investigate the role of state authorities.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court of India over an incident that took place during the recent visit of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai to Maharashtra.
The PIL has raised concern about an alleged breach of official protocol and has urged the Union Government to take suitable action and investigate the matter involving the state authorities.
The contents of the PIL are not yet public, but the filing of such a petition has drawn national attention.
The issue started when CJI BR Gavai visited Maharashtra and certain key government officials from the state, who were expected to receive and welcome him, were reportedly missing.
This situation was seen by many as a violation of proper government protocol. According to standard practice, the visit of a high constitutional authority like the Chief Justice of India is treated with respect, and senior state officials such as the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and Police Commissioner are usually present to receive the dignitary.
The absence of such officials led to a debate about whether the dignity of the judiciary was disregarded. Soon after, the matter turned into a serious concern and reached the Supreme Court in the form of a PIL.
The plea does not yet have full details available to the public, but it clearly shows that the matter has been taken seriously.
In response to the incident, CJI BR Gavai gave a clear message by calling the matter trivial.
He said,
“The basic structure is strong, and all three pillars of the Constitution are equal. And all the organs of the Constitution must reciprocate and give due respect to each other.”
His words pointed out that there should be mutual respect between the judiciary, the executive, and the legislature. He further added that “supreme” is not any one branch of government, but the Constitution of India itself.
The situation also sparked responses from legal bodies. Reports mention that legal organizations and some political leaders expressed disappointment over what happened.
Though the Maharashtra government later issued new guidelines to make sure that similar situations do not occur again, the discussion over respecting constitutional offices has remained in public focus.
Now, with a PIL filed in the Supreme Court, everyone is watching closely to see what the court will say on this matter.

Whether the Union Government will respond with an investigation or action remains to be seen, but the filing of the PIL has underlined how seriously such matters are viewed in a democratic country like India.
