New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has taken an important step in the Manipur violence matter by issuing notice on a writ petition that seeks an independent inquiry into the alleged extrajudicial killings connected to the ongoing unrest in the state.

The petition raises serious concerns about possible illegal encounters and questions the manner in which security operations have been carried out during the violent clashes in Manipur, which have already caused large-scale loss of life, property damage and displacement of people.

During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the petitioners strongly urged the Court to intervene at least to the extent of calling for a detailed status report on the investigation.

The counsel stated they were entitled to know how the investigation was progressing and emphasised that transparency in such sensitive matters was essential to maintain public confidence in the justice system.

It was argued that families of the alleged victims and the general public have a right to be informed about the steps taken by investigative agencies, especially when the issue involves serious allegations of unlawful killings.

Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, while considering the submissions, observed that the main objective of the petition was to ascertain the outcome of the ongoing probe being conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Taking note of the concerns raised, the CJI directed that notice be issued to the concerned parties and made returnable. He further ordered that the notice be served dasti, ensuring that it reaches the respondents without delay for an early response.

This development marks a significant moment in the legal proceedings related to the Manipur violence, as the Supreme Court’s involvement could bring greater scrutiny and accountability to the investigations into the alleged extrajudicial killings.

The matter will now proceed with the respondents expected to inform the Court about the current status and progress of the NIA probe, paving the way for further judicial examination of the serious allegations raised in the petition.
