NEW DELHI: Home Minister Amit Shah has criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his recent campaign appeal to the public during a roadshow in Amritsar.
Shah described Kejriwal’s plea-
“If you vote for me, I will not have to go to jail” as the “utmost disrespect toward the Supreme Court.”
During an interview, Amit Shah expressed his astonishment and disapproval of Kejriwal’s statement. He remarked-
“There cannot be a more significant disregard for the Supreme Court than this. Will the Supreme Court base its judgments on electoral outcomes? I am not asserting this; Kejriwal ji is.”
Shah further emphasized the severity of Kejriwal’s comment by stating-
“I haven’t personally heard Arvind Kejriwal’s statements. As you mentioned, I read about them in the newspaper. However, if indeed he made such remarks, it constitutes a highly inappropriate comment on the Supreme Court’s functioning.”
Shah’s remarks came in response to Kejriwal’s provocative statement made during a roadshow in Amritsar earlier in the week. Kejriwal, accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, had said-
“I am arriving directly from jail to address you. The decision regarding my fate lies in your hands. Before casting your vote, consider whether you are voting for my liberation or for my return to incarceration.”

The recent Supreme Court ruling granting Arvind Kejriwal interim bail until June 1 in a money laundering case linked to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy sets the stage. Amit Shah weighed in on the AAP leaders’ interpretation of the court’s decision, stating-
“I choose not to offer my opinion on the Supreme Court’s verdict. However, I find it necessary to address the AAP leaders’ interpretation of the court’s decision as a victory for Kejriwal. Allow me to clarify. What was their argument presented to the SC? They contended that his arrest was unlawful, but the apex court dismissed this claim. Subsequently, they amended their plea, seeking bail, yet again, to no avail. The Supreme Court, in granting interim bail, specified, ‘Considering your request to campaign in elections, we grant you interim bail, with the condition to surrender on June 1.'”
Amit Shah did not stop at criticizing Kejriwal’s remarks. He also took the opportunity to highlight the ongoing liquor scam that has tainted the AAP’s image. Shah suggested that Kejriwal’s presence in the campaign trail would only remind people of the scandal.
“I believe that no matter where he conducts his election campaign, the public will recall the liquor scandal, including in Punjab. People will also associate large bottles with Kejriwal when they see him.”

Arvind Kejriwal’s recent criticisms of the BJP have added to the intensity of the political atmosphere following his release from jail. The Supreme Court’s grant of interim bail until June 1 enables his participation in the election campaign. This development occurs within the broader framework of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which span seven phases over six weeks, from April 19 to June 1. The polling for the National Capital is slated for May 20 during the fifth phase, with the announcement of results scheduled for June 4.
