NEW DELHI: Today, on June 17, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday gave two more weeks of interim bail to Vikas Yadav, a convict serving a 25-year prison sentence in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.

The extension was allowed so that he can continue to take care of his mother, who is currently unwell and recently underwent surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Vikas Yadav had earlier been granted interim bail on April 24 to attend to his mother’s health condition. This relief was further extended once before, on May 8.

Now, a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan has again allowed him to remain out of jail for two more weeks under the same interim bail terms.

The decision was made considering his mother’s critical medical situation. According to details shared in the courtroom, she underwent surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and Yadav is required to be by her side during this recovery period.

The bench of the Supreme Court observed and ordered,

“The interim bail granted to the petitioner is extended by a further period of two weeks from today.”

The Supreme Court’s decision offers temporary relief to Yadav, who was convicted in one of the most high-profile murder cases in India involving the killing of Nitish Katara, a young man who was in a relationship with Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas Yadav.

The case had received widespread media attention and was seen as an honour killing.

The court made it clear that the extension was only temporary and meant strictly for the purpose of allowing Yadav to attend to his ailing mother. It also indicated that the matter will be reviewed again after the given two-week period.

This is the second extension of bail granted to Yadav after the first relief was provided on April 24. His mother’s surgery and continued treatment at a top government hospital was cited as the reason for this humanitarian consideration by the top court.
