Today, On 14th June, The Supreme Court requested a response from the Central Government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding a plea seeking a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. The plea raises concerns about potential misconduct and errors in the examination process.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court took a significant step in the ongoing dispute over the NEET-UG exam. On Friday, a vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta sought responses from the Centre, the National Testing Agency (NTA), the CBI, and the Bihar government within two weeks regarding a plea for a CBI probe into allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities in the exam.

The pleas, including a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Hiten Singh Kashyap, will be taken up along with other pending cases on July 8, when the top court resumes its regular functioning after the summer vacation.

During the brief hearing, the bench expressed its disapproval when a lawyer referred to the incidents of student suicides in Kota, a hub of coaching centers in Rajasthan, as an argument to support the demand for a CBI investigation.

In response to the request for a CBI investigation, the bench emphasized the necessity of obtaining a response from the NTA before any decision could be made. Justice Nath stated,

“Do not present unnecessary emotional arguments here,”

The lawyer argued,

“This concerns the future of 24 lakh students,”

The bench assured,

“We understand and are fully aware of the implications,”

On Thursday, the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the Supreme Court that they revoked the grace marks initially awarded to 1,563 candidates who had taken the exam for MBBS and related courses. The affected candidates will be given the option to either retake the exam or relinquish the compensatory marks previously granted for the time lost.

The Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the Supreme Court that they have canceled the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates who took the examination for admission to MBBS and other such courses. These candidates will have the option to either retake the exam or forgo the compensatory marks they were granted due to the loss of time during the examination.

The exam conducted on May 5 across 4,750 centers, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing for it. The results, which initially expected to be declared on June 14, were announced on June 4, as the evaluation of the answer sheets completed earlier than anticipated.

There have been allegations of question paper leaks in states like Bihar and other irregularities in this prestigious examination.

The allegations sparked protests in multiple cities and led to the filing of cases in seven high courts as well as the Supreme Court. On June 10, numerous students demonstrated in Delhi, demanding an investigation into the alleged irregularities.

A remarkable 67 students achieved a perfect score of 720, an unprecedented occurrence in the NTA’s history. Notably, six of these students hailed from a center in Faridabad, Haryana, further fuelling suspicions of irregularities. There are claims that grace marks may have played a role in these 67 students attaining the top rank.

The NEET-UG examination, organized by the NTA, is a nationwide test for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions across India.
