The Supreme Court is set to hear a review petition on October 22, 2024, regarding the NEET-UG 2024 examination. The petition, filed on August 31, was brought under Article 137 of the Indian Constitution, which allows the court to review its own judgments. This legal provision grants the Supreme Court the authority to reconsider decisions, and the petition challenges aspects of the NEET-UG exam process. The hearing will address concerns raised by the petitioners.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India scheduled the hearing for a review petition challenging its decision not to reconduct the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG) Medical Admissions 2024 on October 22.

Initially, it was speculated that the petition might be heard on October 21, but the date has now been confirmed for the 22nd.

The petition, filed on August 31, 2024, invokes Article 137 of the Indian Constitution, which grants the Supreme Court the authority to review its judgments. The petitioners submitted the review plea 38 days after the Supreme Court delivered its final verdict, which dismissed previous petitions alleging irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 exam and requesting that the examination be reconducted.

The petitioners, expressing their reaction to the rescheduled hearing, noted that this additional time would allow them to compile more information and strengthen their case before the court. They hope to present new evidence or arguments that would prompt the Court to reconsider its previous ruling.

The Supreme Court’s original verdict, handed down by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, found no abnormalities or significant discrepancies in the conduct of the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

As a result, the bench concluded that there was no need to reconduct the exam.

However, the bench did take notice of broader concerns regarding the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA), the body responsible for administering NEET-UG. The Court directed the Government of India to form a committee to review the NTA’s operations to ensure transparency and smooth conduct of the exams in the future. In response, the Ministry of Education established a review committee chaired by Dr. K Radhakrishnan, the former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and current Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.

The committee’s role is to evaluate and propose reforms to the NTA’s functioning.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam has been embroiled in several controversies, with students alleging issues such as a paper leak, unusually high cut-off marks, and widespread malpractice. These concerns have led many to question the integrity of the examination, prompting calls for it to be reconducted.

However, the Supreme Court’s initial verdict dismissed these claims, maintaining the validity of the exam while mandating reforms to the NTA’s processes.
