The Supreme Court has accepted a review petition against its decision regarding the NEET UG 2024 case, with a hearing scheduled for October 21. The petition, filed by Kajal Kumari earlier claimed that new evidence suggested widespread malpractice undermining the exam’s integrity, including the recovery of 16 mobile phones linked to a paper leak.

New Delhi: After 46 days of filing the review petition, the Supreme Court has finally accepted the review petition against its decision in the NEET UG 2024 case. The hearing is scheduled for October 21. This comes after the court’s August 2 ruling, which dismissed concerns of malpractice due to insufficient evidence.

The petition, filed by Kajal Kumari, argued that new evidence has emerged indicating a widespread breach and malpractice across multiple states, challenging the integrity of the exam. Notably, 16 mobile phones linked to a paper leak were recovered from a pond in Dhanbad, suggesting deeper issues with the fairness of the examination.

The Supreme Court’s August 2 verdict initially closed the chapter, ruling that there was no systematic violation in the NEET UG 2024 exam. The court based its decision on a data analytics report from IIT Madras, concluding there was no significant evidence of malpractice. However, the review petition contends that it is now impossible to distinguish between students who benefited from the malpractice and those who participated honestly.

Review petitions are typically filed when an aggrieved party requests the court to reconsider its earlier decision. These are often heard in chamber hearings, reviewed by the same judges who issued the original order.

In response to earlier concerns, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre-appointed committee to create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to address vulnerabilities in the examination system. These include:

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) earlier emphasized the importance of using technology to protect the integrity of examinations. The committee’s report is expected to provide recommendations for addressing cybersecurity risks and ensuring a secure examination process.

The acceptance of this review petition marks a significant development in the ongoing NEET UG 2024 controversy, as the court will now re-examine the new evidence on October 21.
