Plea Challenges Cancellation of NEET Super Specialty Exam 2024 Before Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the cancellation of the NEET Super Specialty examinations (NEET SS) for 2024. The petition raises significant concerns about the abrupt cancellation and its impact on medical aspirants across the country.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued a notice on the plea. Additionally, the Court granted permission to include the National Board of Examinations (NBE) as a party in the case.

When the plea was presented, CJI Chandrachud questioned the reasoning behind filing a petition under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution. The petitioner’s advocate explained that the NEET SS 2024 was canceled to accommodate NEET PG students.

“To accommodate NEET PG students, the exam is not being held this year. According to the Ashish Ranjan judgment, there is a set timeline for conducting such exams.”

– he said.

Consequently, the Court has issued a notice returnable by next Friday.

According to an Education Times report, the 2024 edition of NEET SS has now been rescheduled for January 2025. A National Medical Council (NMC) official cited in the report mentioned that the delay resulted from the commencement of classes for the 2023 SS batches in March 2024.

The Court is concurrently addressing another issue concerning the leakage of question papers for the NEET undergraduate (UG) examination. Several petitions have been filed seeking a re-examination due to the alleged leakage.

The Court is expected to conclude the hearings on this matter by July 22.

This PIL highlights the growing concerns among medical aspirants regarding the uncertainty and frequent changes in examination schedules.
