New Delhi: Today, On May 26: In a unique and compassionate approach, the Supreme Court of India on Monday advised a couple who are in the middle of a divorce case to have dinner together and try to resolve their issues peacefully.

The couple is also in a legal battle over the custody of their three-year-old child.

The matter came up before a bench comprising Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma.

The woman, who is a fashion entrepreneur, had approached the court seeking permission to travel abroad along with her minor child.

While hearing the matter, the judges expressed concern over the impact of the dispute on the child. They advised the couple to try and resolve their differences outside the courtroom, in a calm and friendly environment.

The court said,

“You have a three-year-old child. What is the ego between the parties?”

The bench expressed that the ongoing fight between the parents was not in the best interest of the child and encouraged them to think about the child’s future.

In an attempt to provide a comfortable setting for the couple to talk things through, the judges made a light-hearted remark about the quality of food in the court premises, saying,

“Our canteen may not be so good for this.”

They then offered an alternative and said,

“We will provide you another drawing room.”

They emphasised the importance of open and personal communication, suggesting,

“Meet over dinner tonight.”

Highlighting how small efforts can lead to positive outcomes, the bench added,

“Much can happen over a cup of coffee.”

This heartwarming direction by the court shows a humane and sensitive side of the judiciary, where instead of just passing orders, the judges are trying to bring families together and avoid bitterness, especially when a young child is involved.

By encouraging personal dialogue between the couple, the Supreme Court has underlined the importance of peaceful resolution in family disputes and the need to put the child’s welfare first.
