NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court held a two-minute silence to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for India’s independence.
At 10:59 AM, all the court’s benches stood in silence for two minutes. Following this, the benches resumed their proceedings.
January 30 marks Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary and is recognized as Martyrs’ Day.
As stated in a circular posted on the Supreme Court’s official website, this observance is dedicated to the memory of those who gave their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.
Earlier, The Supreme Court of India has announced that it will pause its functioning on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM to observe two minutes of silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives during India’s freedom struggle.
The decision has been communicated through an official circular issued by the court administration on January 27, 2026, reaffirming a long-standing tradition followed by the apex court each year on this date.
January 30 is observed nationwide as Martyrs’ Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honouring the countless individuals who gave their lives for India’s independence.
The day also marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, a moment that remains one of the most significant turning points in the nation’s history.
