Supreme Court cancels FIR against Lakshya Sen, his family, and coach over alleged birth certificate forgery. Sen says he’s relieved and ready to focus fully on his badminton career.
New Delhi: On July 28, Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen has expressed relief and gratitude after the Supreme Court of India decided to cancel the FIR (First Information Report) that was filed against him, his family members, and his coach U Vimal Kumar.
The case, which had been going on for a few years, was based on serious accusations related to alleged forgery of birth certificates.
The apex court observed that continuing such a criminal case would be
“an abuse of the process of the court.”
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar made it clear that the FIR and criminal proceedings should not go forward.

The FIR was originally filed in 2022 after a complaint by the head of a rival badminton academy. The complainant had claimed that back in 2010, Lakshya Sen’s parents and coach had allegedly faked the birth certificates of Lakshya and his brother Chirag Sen.
The aim, as alleged, was to make both brothers eligible to play in tournaments that had age restrictions. It was also claimed that these certificates were later used to get government benefits.
Some records obtained through the RTI (Right to Information) Act were attached by the complainant to support these claims.
Because of these allegations, the Karnataka Police registered a case under serious charges of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 420 (cheating), Section 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and Section 471 (using forged documents as genuine).
However, the investigation was put on hold when the Karnataka High Court gave an interim stay. In February 2025, the High Court rejected the requests made by the Sen family and the coach to cancel the FIR, which led them to approach the Supreme Court.
Soon after the top court quashed the FIR, Lakshya Sen welcomed the decision with gratitude and relief. In his statement, he said,
“I respect the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision and am thankful that the matter has now been concluded.”
He further added,
“I had faith in the judiciary and am glad that it has brought clarity. My focus remains on badminton, and I’m committed to continuing my journey with full dedication. I appreciate the support I’ve received from well-wishers during this time.”
The young athlete, who is only 23 years old, emphasized that now he can fully concentrate on his badminton career without any legal worries or stress affecting his game.

Lakshya and Chirag have always let their hard work speak for itself and with this chapter behind us, our full focus is on supporting them as they continue to grow, compete, and make the country proud.”
