The case, which was brought before the apex court, appeared to question the development or establishment of a solar power plant.
During the hearing, Justice Kant expressed strong displeasure and raised serious concerns over the intent behind the litigation.

In a rather direct and pointed tone, he questioned the nature of the petition and the people behind it.
In a moment of surprise and skepticism,
Justice Kant remarked,
“Now you people are even against Solar Plants? What kind of environmentalist are you?”
This comment came after the counsel representing the petitioner attempted to make a point by referring to documents, saying,
“Milord see Annex 8.”
But Justice Kant did not appear satisfied with the explanation. He continued to question the credibility and intentions of the organization behind the petition.
He sharply asked,
“Who has planted you?
What kind of NGO are you?
WHO IS FUNDING?”
The courtroom atmosphere grew more intense when the judge further suggested that the legal action might not be genuine and could be influenced by hidden interests. He firmly stated,
“SOME KIND OF COMPETITOR IS FUNDING THIS LITIGATION.”
These strong words from the bench have sparked discussions within legal and environmental circles, raising concerns about the increasing number of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) allegedly being used with ulterior motives rather than for genuine environmental protection.
The incident also highlights the judiciary’s growing caution and scrutiny when it comes to legal battles involving environmental concerns and clean energy projects like solar plants — especially when such efforts are crucial for India’s sustainable development goals.
The matter continues to be under judicial consideration, and further hearings will likely provide more clarity on the motivations behind the petition and the legal stance of the parties involved.
