Justice Joymalya Bagchi Takes Oath As Supreme Court Judge | To Be Future CJI In 2031

NEW DELHI: Justice Joymalya Bagchi today officially assumed office as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, during a solemn full-court ceremony conducted in the Supreme Court’s first courtroom.

The event was attended by several sitting judges, senior advocates, and other dignitaries from the legal fraternity, marking Justice Bagchi’s formal induction into the highest judicial body of the country.

Justice Bagchi took charge of the Supreme Court today and will hear the RG Kar Medical Case.

After Justice Bagchi sworn in, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court is 33, while the sanctioned strength is 34.

Justice Bagchi will serve as a Supreme Court judge for over six years. During this period, he will also become the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Born on October 3, 1966, Justice Bagchi is set to take over as CJI after the retirement of Justice KV Viswanathan on May 25, 2031. His tenure as the Chief Justice of India will continue until October 2, 2031, the day before his retirement.

The central government approved Justice Bagchi’s name for appointment to the Supreme Court on March 10.

Earlier, on March 6, a five-member collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, had recommended his name for the position of Supreme Court judge.

The collegium included Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Abhay S Oka, and Justice Vikram Nath. They noted that no judge from the Calcutta High Court had become the Chief Justice of India since Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired on July 18, 2013.

Justice Bagchi began his journey as a judge in the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. Later, on January 4, 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

However, he returned to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021, where he continued serving as a judge.

With more than 13 years of experience as a High Court judge, Justice Bagchi holds the 11th position in the combined all-India seniority list of High Court judges, including Chief Justices.

Throughout his long career, he has gained extensive knowledge and expertise in various fields of law.
