The ceremony was marked by reflections and tributes from prominent members of the legal community, each highlighting her distinguished career and the indelible mark she leaves behind.
The Attorney General shared a personal anecdote, recalling a moment with Justice Kohli. He remarked,
“J. Kohli mentioned to me that while I spoke in Kannada for Justice Bopanna, I should now try speaking in Punjabi. You have devoted your entire life to the pursuit of justice.”
This statement underscored the deep commitment and dedication Justice Kohli has shown throughout her illustrious career.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta reflected on the balanced demeanor that Justice Kohli brought to the bench, stating,
“We have often observed a stern demeanor from the bench, but we’ve also witnessed Justice Kohli’s gentle and compassionate side. Your judgments will always remind us of you. We cherish the many positive memories we’ve shared.”
He further added,
“Your Ladyship has consistently taken a firm stand when needed, and I extend my deepest respect to you.”
These words captured the duality of her approach—firm yet compassionate, a quality that endeared her to both colleagues and litigants alike.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, lamented the brevity of her tenure.
“This term has been far too brief,”
-he said, expressing his admiration for her judicial acumen. Sibal shared a piece of advice he often gives to juniors, emphasizing the importance of knowing one’s judge.
“In your courtroom, with your glasses perched low on your nose, it was clear that no one could outmaneuver you or trick you. You were truly meant to be a judge!”
He also noted,
“You’ve worked alongside three senior judges, and now, in your next chapter, you’ll have the freedom to speak your mind openly.”
Another advocate shared a heartfelt sentiment, stating,
“We have never defined you simply as a woman judge; I just want to express how incredibly proud we are of you. You have been a guiding light for us.”
This tribute highlighted the respect and admiration Justice Kohli commanded beyond her gender, for her capabilities as a judge and her role as a mentor.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud also shared his thoughts, reflecting on recent conversations they had.
“In recent days, we have discussed remedies for severe lower back spasms. She mentioned starting her day with the luxury of reading the morning paper, something she hadn’t enjoyed in a long time.”
He spoke warmly of their time together, saying,
“It has been a true pleasure to spend time with J. Kohli, exchanging serious ideas and insights. There were moments when she supported me greatly.”
He added,
“Hima, you are not only a distinguished judge but also a staunch advocate for the rights of working women.”
With a smile, the CJI recounted a light-hearted moment from the morning,
“In the morning, the first five judges visited my chamber for a collegium discussion. J. Kohli, in a light-hearted manner, remarked that they were there to fill her vacancy and expressed a hope that it would be a woman judge.”
This anecdote revealed her subtle humor and her advocacy for gender equality even in her final days on the bench.
In a more personal note, the CJI praised her for balancing her professional duties while caring for her mother.
“I commend J. Kohli for managing her professional responsibilities effectively while caring for her ailing mother,”
-he said, recognizing the often-overlooked personal challenges she navigated.
Finally, Justice Kohli herself spoke, reflecting on her journey and the warmth she felt in the Supreme Court.
“It was a stroke of luck to join the Chief when I arrived at this court, even as a batchmate. It felt like coming home, not because we are in Delhi, but for all the warm faces.”
She expressed her gratitude for the past three years, calling them “a tremendous learning experience,” and acknowledged the kindness and support she received from the bar.
“Everyone has been incredibly kind, and the bar has been so warm, supportive, and considerate, always ready to offer help whenever needed.”
She concluded simply,
“Thanks to everyone.”
As the bench rose for the last time with Justice Kohli, the courtroom was filled with a deep sense of respect and admiration for a judge who has left an enduring legacy.
