A status report from the investigating agency has been sought by a three-judge Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant, which has taken up the death of judicial officer Aman Sharma in a suo motu case and issued notice.

New Delhi: A case registered by the Supreme Court on its own motion over what it has described as the “suspicious death” of judicial officer Aman Sharma, who died at his South Delhi residence in May 2026, is now pending before it, and the Court has sought a status report from the agency investigating the case [In Re: The Suspicious Death of Judicial Officer (Ex-Judge) Aman Sharma].
A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana issued notice in the matter on Friday, November 6, 2026, and called for the status report from the investigating agency.
Where the Court has taken the matter
The Court has registered the matter on its own as a criminal writ petition, W.P.(Crl.) No. 454/2026, issued notice, and directed the investigating agency to place a status report on record. It has not made any finding on how the death occurred or on the allegations in the FIR. The status report is expected to show the stage the Crime Branch investigation has reached.
The death and the FIR
Aman Sharma, a 2018 law graduate, joined the Delhi Judicial Service in 2021. Since October 2025, he had been serving as Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) at Karkardooma Courts. He was found dead at his residence on May 2, 2026, and his death was found to be a suicide.
On the complaint of his father, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against the wife under Sections 61 (criminal conspiracy) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the investigation has since been transferred to the Crime Branch. His family has alleged that for about two months before his death he had been under duress because of harassment by his wife, who is also a judicial officer, and her family.
These are allegations made in the family’s complaint. They have not been tested in any court, the investigation is pending, and the person named in the FIR is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. LawChakra is not naming her.
Why the order matters
Suo motu intervention by the Supreme Court in the death of a serving judicial officer is rare. By asking the investigating agency to account for the progress of the probe, the Court has placed the investigation under its supervision while leaving the facts to be established through the criminal process. The case also draws attention to the pressures faced by members of the district judiciary and the need for support systems for them.
