Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has approached the Supreme Court of India alleging that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made divisive and hate-filled remarks by referring to the removal of “Miya” voters from electoral rolls. The petition claims the statement targets Muslims, misuses a derogatory term, and seeks strict directions to prevent constitutional authorities from making such remarks in the future.
A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court of India against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over an alleged hate speech made by him.
The petition has been moved by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, which has accused the Assam Chief Minister of making statements that promote hatred and deepen divisions between communities.

According to the petition, the controversy arises from a statement allegedly made by the Chief Minister on January 27. In that statement, he reportedly spoke about removing “4 to 5 lakh “Miyan” voters” from the electoral rolls. The petition argues that such a statement targets a specific community and raises serious concerns about equality, dignity, and constitutional values.
The plea also strongly objects to the use of the term “Miyan”, stating that in the context of Assam, the word is commonly used in a “derogatory manner” to refer to Muslims. Jamiat has submitted that the use of such language by a person holding a high constitutional office has the potential to stigmatise an entire community and influence public perception in a negative way.
The organisation has urged the Supreme Court to take the matter seriously and to issue appropriate directions. It has appealed to the Court to order strict action against the Assam Chief Minister,
“so that no person holding a constitutional position makes such statements in the future.”
The petition emphasises that constitutional authorities are expected to act responsibly and uphold the principles of secularism, fraternity, and equality guaranteed under the Constitution.
