The Supreme Court has granted six more weeks to the J&K government to report on detained Pakistani nationals. Authorities cited loss of data due to floods in the Union Territory.
New Delhi: On May 2 – The Supreme Court of India has granted the Jammu and Kashmir government six more weeks to give information about the number of Pakistani nationals who are currently detained under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978 (PSA).
This decision came after the government said that the earlier data about such prisoners had been lost during floods in the Union Territory.
A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan was hearing the matter when the authorities from Jammu and Kashmir told the court that they were unable to provide the exact number of Pakistani nationals detained under PSA because of the loss of records caused by severe floods.
Due to this situation, the court decided to give them extra time to collect and present the required information.
The court said,
“We grant six weeks’ time to the UT of Jammu and Kashmir to provide the details.”
The authorities were earlier expected to submit the report sooner, but the loss of data caused delays.
The bench understood the problem and accepted the request for more time. It then fixed July 25 as the next date to hear the matter and review the status of the submission.

This case is important as it relates to the rights and legal status of foreign nationals detained in India, particularly in a sensitive region like Jammu and Kashmir.
The Public Safety Act, 1978, allows detention of individuals without trial for up to two years under certain conditions, and has often been a topic of legal and human rights discussions.
The court’s direction shows its willingness to allow reasonable time to authorities, especially in cases where unexpected circumstances like natural disasters cause genuine difficulties in providing records.

However, the Supreme Court has also made it clear that the information must be submitted within the extended timeline.
The hearing on July 25 will now be crucial in determining the next legal steps and ensuring accountability regarding the detention of Pakistani nationals in Jammu and Kashmir under the PSA.
