‘Left for His Heavenly Abode’: Former Supreme Court Judge Justice H.S. Bedi Passes Away

Yesterday, On 22nd November, Former Supreme Court judge Justice H.S. Bedi passed away. He was the father of Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi, who currently serves as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice H.S. Bedi was known for his significant contributions to the judiciary during his tenure. His demise marks a loss for the legal community.

Former Supreme Court Justice HS Bedi passed away on Thursday.

In a message shared by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, it was announced that his cremation will take place on Friday in Chandigarh.

The Association conveyed the news with deep sorrow, stating,

“With profound grief and sorrow, it is to inform that Hon’ble Mr. Justice H.S. Bedi [Former Judge of Supreme Court of India, Former Chief Justice of High Court of Bombay, and Former Acting Chief Justice of this High Court] and father of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi, has left for his heavenly abode.”

As a tribute to the former judge, it was also stated that lawyers at the High Court would refrain from work after 1 PM on Friday.

Justice Bedi was born on September 5, 1946. His father, Justice Tikka Jagjit Singh Bedi, served as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Justice HS Bedi was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana on July 17, 1972. In 1974, he began serving as a part-time law lecturer, a role he maintained until 1983. Additionally, he held the position of Deputy Advocate General for the State of Punjab from 1983 to 1987.

Designated a Senior Advocate in 1987, he served as the Additional Advocate General of Punjab until 1989. In 1990, he was appointed Advocate General of Punjab.

Almost a year later, on March 15, 1991, he became an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was confirmed as a permanent Judge on July 8, 1992, and later appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on October 3, 2006.

On January 12, 2007, he assumed the role of Supreme Court judge, serving until his retirement on September 5, 2011.

In 2012, the Supreme Court appointed Justice HS Bedi as Chairman of the Monitoring Authority established by the State of Gujarat to investigate alleged fake encounter cases.

In his subsequent report, Justice Bedi recommended further investigation into three of the 17 cases he reviewed and noted that there was no evidence of selective targeting of Muslims.
