Farewell To Supreme Court’s Justice Krishna Murari

In a moving farewell ceremony, Justice Krishna Murari, a distinguished figure in the Indian judiciary, marked his last day as a Supreme Court judge. During his parting address, he emphasized the Supreme Court’s role as the embodiment of India’s rich and diverse civilization. 

Justice Murari eloquently stated,

“If our Constitution is the arch on the edifice of which our nation rests, then the Supreme Court is the key stone holding this Constitutional arch in place. All players will come and go, but this Supreme Court shall continue to function.”

His words underscored the enduring nature of the Supreme Court and its pivotal role in safeguarding the Constitution, thereby ensuring the stability of the nation. 

In his speech, Justice Murari also advocated for the nurturing of junior counsel, urging senior lawyers to provide them with ample opportunities to refine their skills. He said,

“I urge seniors to give ample opportunities to juniors. One can be a good lawyer, but all of them need a platform to showcase their talent. I always encouraged the younger members of the bar to argue.” 

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, in his tribute, praised Justice Murari’s calm demeanor and humility in court. He further highlighted Justice Murari’s significant contributions to service and family law. 

Attorney General for India R Venkataramani and Supreme Court Bar Association Adish Aggarwala also paid their respects to Justice Murari during the event. 

Justice Murari’s legal journey began with his law degree from Allahabad University. He was enrolled as an advocate on December 23, 1981, and started his practice at the Allahabad High Court. His judicial career progressed when he was appointed as an additional judge on January 7, 2004. He became a permanent judge in 2005, and in June 2018, he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His journey culminated with his elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019. 

As Justice Krishna Murari bids farewell to the Supreme Court, his words and actions continue to resonate, underscoring the Court’s role in upholding the Constitutional arch over the nation. His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing the next generation of legal professionals, ensuring the continued protection of India’s diverse civilization under the Constitutional arch.
