NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday(11th Nov) rejected the bail plea of former JD(S) Member of Parliament (MP) Prajwal Revanna in a rape and sexual assault case.

A Bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma dismissed the plea after a brief hearing.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Revanna, acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but argued that the complaint lacked a specific rape allegation. He also claimed that the case became prominent as he contested the Lok Sabha elections and lost due to the charges.

Despite these arguments, the Court declined to grant bail. When Rohatgi inquired about the possibility of reapplying after six months, the Court responded, “We won’t say anything.”

Earlier, in October, the Karnataka High Court had also denied bail, prompting Revanna’s appeal to the Supreme Court through advocate Balaji Srinivasan.

On August 24, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating four sexual assault and harassment cases against Revanna submitted a 2,144-page charge sheet in the first case to a special court handling MPs/MLAs’ cases. The SIT has accused him of raping a woman who worked as a domestic help for his family.

The allegations against Prajwal Revanna came to light after over 2,900 videos depicting the sexual assault of several women circulated online, including on social media.

first information report (FIR) filed against Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna on April 28 under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) of the IPC at the Holenaraseepur town police station in Hassan district. The criminal case initiated based on a complaint from one of the victims, and the SIT, led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh, is conducting the investigation.

In the midst of the ensuing public outrage and political controversy, Prajwal Revanna fled to Germany shortly after the April 26 Lok Sabha elections in the state. He arrested upon his return to India on May 31.

The Supreme Court had recently upheld the anticipatory bail granted to Bhavani Revanna, his mother, in a case involving the kidnapping of the complainant-survivor.
