NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court directed the Central government to convene a meeting of all stakeholders to address the Delhi government‘s request for additional water supply from Himachal Pradesh through Haryana.

The order was issued by a Vacation Bench consisting of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and KV Viswanathan, following a petition from the Delhi government. The petition sought directives for the State of Haryana to facilitate the water supply to the national capital from Himachal Pradesh.

“Why cannot there be a joint meeting of all the stakeholders?”

-the Court queried Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta at the outset of the hearing.

SG Mehta informed the Court that the matter is currently under consideration by the Upper Yamuna River Board. However, he also highlighted the issue of water wastage in Delhi, stating,

“The Delhi government has to rein in leakages. Water loss is more than 52% because of tanker mafia and all my lords.”

Representing the Delhi government, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing an extreme heatwave in Delhi and the need to maintain water levels at the Wazirabad plant.

At this juncture, the Court reiterated its suggestion for the Centre to organize a stakeholder meeting.

SG Mehta confirmed that such a meeting would be held on June 5.

In the proceedings, counsel for Himachal Pradesh indicated the State’s willingness to provide water to Delhi through its canal network.

The Supreme Court scheduled the next hearing for June 6.

The Delhi government has requested additional water as an emergency measure to combat the ongoing heatwave. The national capital is currently enduring severe heat with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, compounded by an acute water shortage, as pointed out during the hearing.
