Today, On 21st July, The Supreme Court deferred the criminal contempt plea against WB CM Mamata Banerjee, warning, “Don’t try to politicize your political battle before the Court.” The bench made it clear the courtroom is not a political platform.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today postponed the hearing on a criminal contempt petition filed against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a public charitable trust.
The petition concerns her comments regarding the Court’s ruling in the teacher recruitment scam case.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran reviewed the matter. Senior Advocate Maninder Singh informed the Court that an application seeking the Attorney General’s consent to initiate contempt proceedings had already been submitted.
The matter was listed as Item No. 3 before a bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and involves a petition seeking to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against the Chief Minister.
CJI Gavai remarked,
“Are you so sure that you will get the consent? Don’t try to politicize before the Court your political battle. You should fight somewhere else.”
The case was scheduled to be listed again in four weeks.
The proceedings stem from public comments made by the Chief Minister following the Supreme Court’s April 3, 2025, ruling, which annulled over 25,000 school appointments in West Bengal due to significant irregularities in the recruitment process.
Following the verdict, Mamata Banerjee reportedly made statements during public addresses that the petitioner claims are contemptuous and intended to undermine the Court’s authority.
The Chief Minister allegedly questioned the Court’s right to annul appointments and accused it of conspiring to harm the state’s education system.
Among other remarks, she stated,
“Who has the right to take anyone’s job? No one… you can put me in jail for saying this. But I don’t care.”
She further added,
“To destroy the education system… there is a conspiracy going on. You are calling all of them thieves… Who has given you right to say so? I am openly challenging…”
According to the petitioner, these comments by a sitting Chief Minister not only undermine judicial authority but may also mislead the public and erode trust in the institution.
This case has been filed by a public charitable trust called Aatmdeep under Diary No. 21869/2025. The trust alleges that Mamata Banerjee made public comments that disrespect the Supreme Court and its authority.
