Today, On 7th April, BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India, raising concerns over attacks on the judiciary by the West Bengal Government. He praised the Supreme Court’s decision in the SSC scam case and called it a big relief for lakhs of students. Mahato strongly criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for disrespecting the judiciary in public. He said, “Smt. Mamata Banerjee’s pattern of undermining judicial authority is now unmistakable.”

Kolkata: Jyotirmay Singh Mahato, Member of Parliament from Purulia, West Bengal, in a strongly worded letter to the Chief Justice of India, expressed grave concern over what he termed as the West Bengal government’s “escalating attacks” on the judiciary, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam case.
Mahato began by expressing his heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for its historic and courageous verdict in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment case, highlighting how the ruling delivered long-awaited justice to over 2 million aspirants.
However, Mahato raised alarm over the reaction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee post-verdict, calling it “deeply disturbing and concerning.”
He wrote,
“The reaction of West Bengal Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, under whose regime this scam was orchestrated, has been nothing short of alarming.”
He noted that instead of respecting the apex court’s decision, “the Chief Minister chose to criticise the judiciary in a press conference held at the state secretariat, flanked by senior IAS officers.”
According to the MP, the situation further escalated on April 7, when Mamata Banerjee, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, and Education Minister Bratya Basu addressed a government-organised meeting at Netaji Indoor Stadium.
Mahato stated,
“The event, under the guise of expressing solidarity with the impacted candidates, turned into a platform to openly denounce the Supreme Court and attack Your Lordship personally.”
He further alleged that writer Abul Bashar, who made “shocking and disrespectful comments about the judiciary,” admitted being invited by Education Minister Bratya Basu.
Mahato called this “a gross affront to the dignity of the judiciary.”
Mahato claimed this was not an isolated incident.
He wrote,
“Whenever the courts have taken action against the corruption of the TMC government, its leaders and even cadres have resorted to attacks verbal and physical against judges, especially from the Calcutta High Court.”
In a sharp critique, Mahato asserted,
“Smt. Mamata Banerjee’s pattern of undermining judicial authority is now unmistakable. From the Saradha chit fund scam to the current SSC scam, the modus operandi is chillingly similar:
• Loot public money using a corrupt system;
• Use state machinery and exchequer funds to hire top lawyers and delay justice;
• Attack the judiciary when exposed;
• Politicise legal scrutiny by blaming opposition parties.”
Calling the situation a threat to the very foundation of our Constitution,
Mahato urged the Hon’ble Supreme Court to,
• “Take suo motu cognizance of these repeated attacks on the judiciary by constitutional functionaries.”
• “Investigate the use of state resources and funds to defend the accused in this large-scale scam.”
• “Ensure that those who have disrespected the Court under the protection of political power face appropriate consequences under law.”
He emphasized that “the people of Bengal are watching, and they see the judiciary as their last hope for justice in a system plagued by an endless cycle of corruption and victimhood.”
Concluding the letter, Mahato stated,
“If in any part of this letter I have breached decorum or protocol unintentionally, I offer my sincere apologies to the Hon’ble Chief Justice and the Supreme Court of India.”
