Today, On 10th November, The West Bengal Congress has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state, alleging irregularities and bias in the voter list update process ahead of the upcoming elections in Bengal.
The Congress party’s West Bengal unit has approached the Supreme Court to contest the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls mandated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the state.
The petitioner’s counsel brought the issue before Justice Surya Kant, who is also handling the Bihar SIR case. He requested that the West Bengal matter be scheduled for hearing on Tuesday alongside the Bihar case.
The counsel stated,
“The Bihar matter is listed tomorrow. We want the matter listed tomorrow with the Bihar SIR case,”
He further noted that constituents have been approaching the party, highlighting problems in the process, which has prompted the party to seek intervention from the Supreme Court.
The Bench responded,
“It is up to the CJI to decide whether the WB matter will also come before us,”
The counsel pointed out that other similar cases related to SIR are also set for discussion tomorrow, in conjunction with the Bihar SIR matter. The Bench then agreed to list the West Bengal issue for Tuesday along with the Bihar case.
The ECI initially ordered a Special Intensive Revision in June 2025. Several petitions, including those from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Federation for Indian Women (NFIW), are already pending before the Supreme Court challenging this directive.
Nonetheless, the ECI moved forward with the SIR in Bihar since the Supreme Court did not impose any stay on the process. On October 27, 2025, the ECI extended the SIR to additional states and Union Territories, including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party has also filed a petition with the Supreme Court contesting the SIR in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has approached the Supreme Court of India, challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu. The party has termed the move unconstitutional, arbitrary, and a threat to the voting rights of genuine citizens.
The petition, filed by R.S. Bharathi, Organising Secretary of the DMK and former Rajya Sabha MP, seeks to quash the ECI’s orders dated October 27, 2025, which extended the SIR process to Tamil Nadu based on earlier guidelines issued on June 24, 2025.
