“To His Parent High Court of Allahabad”: SC Collegium Recommends Transfer of Delhi HC Justice Chandra Dhari Singh

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the repatriation of Delhi High Court Justice Chandra Dhari Singh to his parent High Court. The decision follows a review of his tenure and professional background. This move aligns with the court’s policy of maintaining balance in judicial appointments across various High Courts. Justice Singh is expected to return to his original judicial assignment for further contributions.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium recommended returning Justice Chandra Dhari Singh of the Delhi High Court to his original position at the Allahabad High Court. The decision made during meetings chaired by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on November 28 and 29, 2024.

According to the resolution,

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on November 28 and 29, 2024 has recommended the repatriation of Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, judge of the High Court of Delhi, to his parent High Court, i.e., the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad.”

Justice Singh earned his law degree from Delhi University in 1993 and became an advocate on July 20, 1994. He practiced as an “advocate-on-record” in the Supreme Court and appointed as an additional judge on September 22, 2017, later becoming a permanent judge on September 6, 2019. He was transferred to the Delhi High Court on October 11, 2021.

The Supreme Court Collegium is a body responsible for recommending appointments and transfers of judges to the higher judiciary, including the Supreme Court and High Courts in India. It consists of the Chief Justice of India and the four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.

The Collegium plays a critical role in maintaining judicial independence and ensuring the selection of qualified and experienced judges for the country’s highest courts. Decisions made by the Collegium are typically confidential and involve thorough deliberations on a judge’s career, reputation, and legal acumen.
