New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India directed the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court not to assign any judicial responsibilities to Justice Yashwant Varma.

Justice Varma’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court was officially announced today by the Central government following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium on March 24.

In a statement released today, the Supreme Court noted,

“The Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court for the time being has been asked not to assign any judicial work to Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, when he assumes charge as a Judge of the Allahabad High Court.”

This decision was made by the Collegium after conducting two meetings one on March 20 and another on March 24.

A fire at Justice Varma’s residence on the evening of March 14 inadvertently resulted in the discovery of unaccounted cash by firefighters, according to news reports.

It is said that a video of the recovered burnt cash was shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the High Court. At the time of the incident, Justice Varma and his wife were away in Madhya Pradesh, leaving only his daughter and elderly mother at home.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) launched an internal investigation into the allegations and established a three-member committee to oversee the inquiry.

Additionally, the Supreme Court released a report from the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court regarding the incident, along with Justice Varma’s response.

Justice Varma, born in 1969, earned his LLB degree from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh and became a registered advocate in 1992. During his legal career, he served as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as the chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh.

In 2013, he was designated as a Senior Advocate and later appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in October 2014. He became a permanent judge in February 2017 and was subsequently transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he took office on October 11, 2021.
