The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justices N.V. Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and A.S. Chandurkar for elevation to the Supreme Court. Their appointments await final approval from the government.

New Delhi: Today, On May 26, In an important development, the Supreme Court Collegium, during its meeting held on 26th May 2025, has proposed the names of three senior judges for appointment as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.

The recommendation includes two current Chief Justices of High Courts and one senior judge. If approved, these names will soon be considered by the Central Government for final notification.

Justice N.V. Anjaria, who is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, has been proposed for elevation to the Supreme Court. His parent High Court (PHC) is the Gujarat High Court. Justice Anjaria has had a distinguished judicial career, known for his well-reasoned judgments and deep knowledge of constitutional law.

Justice Vijay Bishnoi, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, has also been recommended for elevation. His parent High Court is the Rajasthan High Court. Justice Bishnoi is recognized for his disciplined approach to judicial work and his significant contributions to the administration of justice in the Northeast region.

Justice A.S. Chandurkar, a Judge of the Bombay High Court, has also been included in the list. Justice Chandurkar is widely respected for his integrity and experience in handling complex legal matters.These recommendations are part of the continuing process of filling up vacant seats in the Supreme Court and ensuring that the top court has a strong and diverse bench.

As of May 26, 2025, the Supreme Court of India has three vacant positions out of its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. These vacancies have been created following the retirement of former Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Abhay S. Oka, and Justice Bela M. Trivedi.

These recommendations are now awaiting approval by the President of India. Once appointed, the Supreme Court will once again move closer to operating at its full sanctioned strength, helping improve judicial efficiency and reducing the case backlog.

The elevations will take effect only after the President of India gives the final approval, following consultation with the Government of India.
