Today, On 10th July, The Supreme Court collegium recommended the appointment of three additional judges from the Delhi High Court as permanent judges. This move aims to bolster the judiciary’s strength and improve the efficiency of the court.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and including Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B.R. Gavai, proposed three additional judges from the Delhi High Court for permanent positions.
Additionally, the collegium recommended that seven additional judges from the Bombay High Court be made permanent judges. Furthermore, it suggested extending the terms of Justices Sanjay Anandrao Deshmukh and Vrushali Vijay Joshi as additional judges of the Bombay High Court for another year, starting from October 7, 2024.

A collegium resolution dated July 9, which posted on the Supreme Court’s website, stated ,
“In light of the aforementioned considerations, the collegium has decided to recommend the appointment of Justices Girish Kathpalia, Manoj Jain, and Dharmesh Sharma as permanent judges of the High Court of Delhi to fill existing vacancies,”
The resolution mentioned that the Delhi High Court collegium unanimously recommended these three additional judges for permanent positions on March 12, 2024.
It added,
“In accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the Delhi High Court’s operations were consulted to determine the suitability of the named additional judges for permanent appointments,”
A separate resolution on the Supreme Court’s website read,
“The collegium recommends that Justices Santosh Govindrao Chapalgaonkar, Milind Manohar Sathaye, and Neela Kedar Gokhale, currently additional judges, be appointed as permanent judges of the High Court of Bombay to address existing vacancies.”
On May 3 this year, the collegium of the Bombay High Court unanimously recommended appointing these additional judges as permanent judges.

The resolution stated,
“The Chief Ministers and the Governors of the States of Maharashtra and Goa have agreed with the recommendation,”
A separate resolution from the apex court collegium declared,
“Justices Yanshivraj Gopichand Khobragade, Mahendra Wadhumal Chandwani, Abhay Sopanrao Waghwase, and Ravindra Madhusudan Joshi, additional judges, are recommended for appointment as permanent judges of the High Court of Bombay to fill the existing vacancies.”
These recommendations highlights the collegium’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the judicial system by ensuring that vacancies are promptly filled with qualified and competent judges. The appointments are crucial for the efficient administration of justice and to uphold the integrity of the judiciary in India.
