The request for an early hearing was communicated to Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud by Kejriwal’s legal representative, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi. In response, the Chief Justice indicated a willingness to consider the plea, emphasizing the need for the formal request to be sent via email.
“I will look into the e-mail (seeking early listing of plea). Please send the mail”
The urgency of the matter was highlighted by Singhvi, who pointed out the significant implications for Kejriwal, noting that the arrest was predicated on documents not previously relied upon and that critical information had been withheld from them.
“This is urgent and is regarding the Delhi chief minister. The arrest is based on an un-relied document and suppressed from us.”
–Singhvi said.
This plea to the Supreme Court comes in the wake of a judgment by the Delhi High Court on April 9, which dealt a significant blow to Kejriwal, especially with the Lok Sabha elections on the horizon.
The high court upheld Kejriwal’s arrest in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) argued that it had no alternative but to proceed with the arrest after Kejriwal repeatedly failed to respond to summonses and refused to participate in the investigation process.
Moreover, the court supported its decision by referencing the ED’s allegations that Kejriwal was not only complicit in a conspiracy but also actively engaged in both the utilization and concealment of the proceeds of crime, leading to the dismissal of his petition against the arrest.
This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal and political saga surrounding the Delhi Chief Minister, spotlighting the intertwining of legal proceedings with political dynamics as the nation approaches crucial electoral milestones.
