NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna has strongly condemned giving false testimony in court, calling it a grave offense.

He stated, “Giving false testimony before the court is a very serious crime.”

Additionally, Justice Khanna expressed his disagreement with a bench’s observation that providing false statements under Order 10 Rule 2 is not a serious issue.

This remark was made during a case involving allegations of false statements by former Mahant Surendra Nath Avdhoot of Kalkaji Temple in Delhi concerning the temple’s administration. The Supreme Court has dismissed his appeal and remanded the case to the trial court for further proceedings on the matter of false testimony.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court sought a report from Kalkaji Temple Mahant Surendra Nath regarding the management of the Navratri event. Justice Prathiba M. Singh has also directed the Delhi Police to file a status report following the tragic death of a 17-year-old boy caused by an uncovered wire.

Highlighting the gravity of the incident, Justice Singh remarked, “A similar incident occurred last year as well. Every year, we have to issue directions for proper management.”

The High Court noted that the court-appointed administrator for the temple has not received remuneration and that currently, there is no administrator overseeing the temple’s operations. The Mahant, identified as the baridar, has been instructed to submit a detailed report on the measures taken to manage the crowd. Additionally, the Delhi Police has been asked to provide a report regarding the fatal incident involving the uncovered wire.

Redevelopment work at the Kalkaji Temple is ongoing, and an administrator was appointed by the High Court three years ago to supervise its management. The standing counsel has been directed to submit a status report.
