NEW DELHI: Today (25th July): The Supreme Court will now examine whether MLA Abbas Ansari should be granted bail in a case involving illegal meetings with his wife in the Chitrakoot jail office in Uttar Pradesh.

On Thursday, the top court issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government regarding Ansari’s bail plea.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, informed the court that Section 387 of the IPC has also been invoked in this case.

In May, the Allahabad High Court rejected the bail application of the Mau (Sadar) MLA, stating that if he can influence jail authorities, he might also influence witnesses if released on bail.

Abbas Ansari is accused of illegally meeting his wife, Nikhat, in the prison superintendent’s office at Chitrakoot jail. These meetings, reportedly lasting several hours, were discovered during a sudden raid by senior officials on February 11, 2023. Nikhat Ansari was arrested in the VVIP guest room adjacent to the jailor’s office during the raid.

It is alleged that Nikhat Ansari visited Abbas for three to four hours at least three times a week, facilitated by jail authorities, and that her visits were not logged in the jail register. Following the incident, Abbas Ansari, son of the late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was transferred from Chitrakoot prison to Kasganj district jail in February 2023.

In August 2023, Nikhat Ansari secured bail from the Supreme Court in the case.
