Jyoti Jagtap, one of the youngest accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, gets interim bail from the Supreme Court after 5 years 6 months in custody. Her bail plea was argued by Senior Advocate Aparna Bhat before the top court.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to Jyoti Jagtap, one of the accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case. The order came from a Bench comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma after it was informed that Jagtap had been in custody for nearly five and a half years.
“She has been in custody since 5 years 6 months. Let the matter be adjourned as sought but bail be granted,”
Senior Advocate Aparna Bhat told the court on behalf of Jagtap.
Following this, the Bench proceeded to grant her interim bail, providing temporary relief to one of the youngest accused in the high-profile case.
Jyoti Jagtap was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on September 8, 2020, and her chargesheet was filed on October 9, 2020.
She has been accused of being a member of the Kabir Kala Manch (KKM), which is listed as a banned organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). KKM, a cultural group known for promoting social causes through music and poetry, was reportedly formed in the aftermath of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Earlier, Jagtap had approached the Bombay High Court after her bail application was rejected by a special NIA court on February 14, 2022. However, in October 2022, the Bombay High Court also dismissed her petition, prompting her to seek relief from the Supreme Court.
This interim bail marks a significant development in the ongoing Bhima Koregaon case, where several activists and cultural workers have faced long periods of incarceration while awaiting trial under stringent anti-terror laws.
