NEW DELHI: Today (11th June): The Supreme Court vacation bench declined to entertain the new petitions for an urgent hearing regarding discrepancies in the NEET-UG 2024 results.

Advocate J Sai Deepak presented a fresh petition challenging the NEET results before the vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah.

Several separate petitions have been filed, contesting the ‘grace marks’ awarded to over 1500 students due to exam delays.

The sanctity has been affected, and we need answers!

Issue notice. Meanwhile, the NTA will file a response. Let the counseling proceed—we’re not stopping it.

“How much time you want? Immediately on the re-opening? Otherwise, the counselling will start.” Justice Amanullah told the NTA’s counsel

They have requested a reconducting of the NEET-UG exam through an urgent writ petition, urging the court to expedite the hearing process.

The petitioners argue that the grace marks granted to some students were arbitrary and claim it is statistically improbable for several students to score as high as 718 and 719 out of 720. They also question how 67 students from one specific center achieved full marks of 720 and cite multiple complaints about the provisional answer key published by NTA on April 29.

Additionally, the petitioners have highlighted widespread allegations of a question paper leak from the exam held on May 5. They are seeking a stay on NEET-UG 2024 counselling until the alleged paper leak investigation is completed and have demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the issue.

On June 8, the NTA and the Union Education Ministry announced that a four-member committee would review the results of over 1,500 candidates who received grace marks due to time loss. On Tuesday, counsel requested that his petition be heard with the listed NEET-UG matter, but the court directed him to approach the Registry, with the petition to be routed through CJI DY Chandrachud for listing and clubbing.

Background

Shivangi Mishra and nine other petitioners filed a plea on June 1 seeking the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG. The NEET results were released on June 4 and have been controversial, partly due to the grace marks policy.

Following the announcement of the results, several additional petitions were submitted to the Supreme Court challenging the National Testing Agency’s decision to award grace marks to numerous candidates.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5, 2024, from 2 pm to 5.20 pm IST. The exam held across 4,750 centers in 571 cities, including 14 cities abroad, with over 24 lakh candidates appearing for it.

The NTA officials stated that the students at certain centers could not complete the full 3 hours and 20 minutes of the exam due to administrative issues. These included the distribution of the wrong question paper, torn OMR sheets, or delays in the distribution of OMR sheets.
