Top Indian business leaders including Adani, Ambanis, and Birla have jointly funded a Rs 50 crore health insurance scheme for Supreme Court lawyers, offering free coverage to thousands of legal professionals and their families. This historic initiative was announced by SCBA President Kapil Sibal during the Supreme Court’s 75th anniversary.
In a historic act of corporate generosity, some of India’s biggest business leaders have come together to donate Rs 50 crore towards a special group health insurance scheme for the members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
This never-seen-before welfare initiative was announced by SCBA President and senior advocate Kapil Sibal during the grand 75th anniversary celebration of the Supreme Court of India.

This is the first time that such a large-scale welfare programme for lawyers has been directly funded by top industrialists of the country.
Major contributions, ranging from Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore, came from renowned names like the Vedanta Group, Anil Ambani, Gautam Adani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Lakshmi Mittal, the Dhirubhai Ambani family, and the Torrent Group.
Kapil Sibal played a key role in putting this scheme together. He personally reached out to each of these business tycoons and convinced them to support the cause. Sharing the behind-the-scenes story,
Sibal said,
“I rang up Vedanta, and they gave Rs 5 crores. I called my dear friend Anil Ambani—he couldn’t say no. Adani, I told him he’s the emperor of India now, and he gave ₹5 crores. Birla and Mittal came forward with Rs 5 crores each. I asked the Ambani family to give ₹10 crores—and they did. Torrent Group too joined in with Rs 5 crores.”
The insurance scheme, now fully operational, is being handled by United India Insurance and is completely free of cost for SCBA members.
It is a comprehensive cashless plan and offers coverage to thousands of lawyers and their families.
Sibal expressed the true intention behind this initiative, stating,
“This isn’t just a policy—it’s a lifeline. We see young lawyers coming to the court with dreams, but no safety net. This is our way of saying—we’ve got your back.”

This group health insurance plan provides the following benefits:
- Annual coverage of Rs 2 lakh per family
- Coverage includes parents and in-laws of the insured lawyer

- Cashless treatment available in over 15,000 hospitals across India
- Rs 50,000 maternity benefit for both normal and caesarean deliveries
- Coverage includes internal congenital diseases, LASIK eye surgery, and ambulance charges
This initiative is not only a strong step towards lawyer welfare but also shows how India’s corporate sector is willing to step in and support the legal fraternity, especially the younger generation of lawyers who often face financial insecurity early in their careers.
In addition to the launch of the health insurance scheme, the SCBA also unveiled a special book titled Pillars of Justice during the 75th anniversary celebration.
This academic volume contains critical essays on landmark judgments delivered by the Supreme Court of India.
The book is aimed at young legal minds and seeks to encourage deeper engagement with the law.
said Sibal,
“The book is for our young academics—to read, critique, and engage. Legal thinking must evolve, not just be followed blindly,”
highlighting the importance of continuous learning and legal scholarship.
Contributors to this important legal volume include well-known lawyers and thinkers like Gautam Bhatia, Rohit Sharma, Jhanvi Sindhu, Vikramaditya Narayan, Astha Sharma, Amit Anand Tiwari, Tanvi Anand, Rahul Narayan, Mohammad Nizamuddin Pasha, Talha Abdul Rahman, Jayant Mohan, Shreyas U Lalit, Manisha Singh, and George Pothan.
Together, the announcement of this landmark insurance initiative and the release of Pillars of Justice showcase a powerful example of how legal professionals, corporate leaders, and scholars can unite to strengthen India’s judicial system and support the community that upholds it.
