“As an interim order, we direct that the petitioner, Rasik Chandra Mondal, will be released on interim bail/parole during the pendency of the present writ petition, on terms and conditions to be fixed by the trial court,” stated the bench, which also included Justice Sanjay Kumar.
Earlier, a bench comprising Justice Abdul Nazeer and Justice Khanna had issued a notice on the petition, directing the superintendent of the correctional facility where the petitioner was housed to submit a status report on his current physical condition and health.
Rasik Chandra Mandal Conviction Case Summary
Rasik Chandra Mandal was convicted in 1994 for a 1988 murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at the age of 68. Over the years, he repeatedly challenged his sentence, but his appeals were rejected by the Calcutta High Court in 2018 and later by the Supreme Court.
In 2020, Mandal approached the Supreme Court again, seeking premature release on the grounds of old age and poor health. At 99, he pleaded for leniency. The Supreme Court took the matter seriously, requesting a report from the West Bengal government in 2021.
