New Delhi: A Delhi court, On Thursday, ordered the statements of two police officers to be recorded on July 26 in a criminal case brought by female wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
Vinod Tomar, the former assistant secretary of WFI, is also an accused in the case.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot issued summons for the two police officers to appear on July 26 to provide their statements. In May, the court charged Brij Bhushan Singh with sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and outraging the modesty of women, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The case filed by six female wrestlers against Singh. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot, who initially set to deliver the verdict on Tuesday, postponed the decision, citing the need for certain corrections in the order.
Brij Bhushan, a BJP MP, denied a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to allegations of sexual harassment made against him by six women wrestlers. These wrestlers staged a prolonged protest against him last year. In his place, the party decided to field his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, as the candidate. A Delhi court, officially charged Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with sexual harassment of five women wrestlers and also with the crime of outraging the modesty of a woman.
A minor wrestler also accused Singh of sexual harassment. However, she later withdrew her complaint, leading to the Delhi Police filing a cancellation report in that case. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice in cases of sexual harassment, particularly in the world of sports.
The court’s decision will have significant implications for the ongoing legal battle and will shape the course of the trial against Singh. As the proceedings continue, it is essential to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and impartiality to ensure a just outcome for all parties involved.
