An MP-MLA court in Sultanpur has reserved its order on AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s request to travel abroad. The case relates to alleged violations of the model code of conduct during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi.
An MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday reserved its decision on a request made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to allow him to travel abroad.
Kejriwal’s lawyer, Rudra Pratap Singh Madan, explained the situation after the hearing.
He said,
“A poll code violation case was registered in Amethi against the former Delhi chief minister. Earlier, the court had allowed renewal of his passport with a condition that he must seek permission before any foreign travel. Today, we requested the court to lift that condition as he needs to travel abroad. The hearing was held and the order has been reserved.”
In August this year, the same court had given Kejriwal permission to renew his passport, but with a strict condition that he could not leave India without prior court approval.
The case against Kejriwal dates back to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, he was accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct while campaigning in Amethi district, particularly in the Gauriganj and Musafirkhana areas.
Currently, Kejriwal is out on bail in this case. However, the proceedings remain on hold because the Supreme Court has already issued a stay on the trial.
The court in Sultanpur has now heard the arguments on lifting the restriction imposed earlier and has reserved its order.
