Toxic Syrup Tragedy | Court Sends Tamil Nadu Pharma Owner to Judicial Custody

MADHYA PRADESH: The owner of Sresen Pharma, Govindan, has been remanded in judicial custody by a local court following a series of tragic child deaths linked to a toxic cough syrup. Officials confirmed that Govindan was produced before Additional Session Judge Gautam Gurjar in Parasia town after completing a 10-day police custody period.

The case, which has sparked widespread outrage, involves the deaths of at least 24 children from Chhindwara and nearby districts. The children reportedly suffered kidney failure after consuming ‘Coldrif’ syrup, a product later found to contain toxic substances.

SIT Investigation and Arrests

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Jitendra Singh Jaat, had earlier taken Govindan to Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu for questioning regarding the manufacturing process and distribution of the syrup. Following the inquiry, his company’s manufacturing unit was sealed as part of the investigation.

Other individuals implicated in the case, Dr. Praveen Soni, a local physician who allegedly prescribed the toxic syrup; his nephew Rajesh Soni, a medicine wholesaler; and Saurabh Jain, a pharmacist at a medical store owned by Dr. Soni’s wife, are already in judicial custody.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Madhya Pradesh government has suspended two drug inspectors and a deputy director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, the state’s drug controller has been transferred amid allegations of regulatory negligence.

Meanwhile, a local court rejected the bail plea of Dr. Praveen Soni, prompting him to move the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking relief. His petition is likely to be heard soon.
