NEW DELHI: A court in Delhi on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, until July 6. Kumar is accused of assaulting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Swati Maliwal on May 13 at the Chief Minister’s official residence.

Kumar was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal via video conferencing, where the decision to extend his judicial custody was made. Kumar has been in custody since his arrest on May 18.

The incident led to an FIR being registered against Kumar on May 16 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those pertaining to criminal intimidation, assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to disrobe, and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

Following his arrest on May 18, Kumar was initially sent to police custody for five days. The magisterial court noted that his anticipatory bail plea had become infructuous due to his arrest. Subsequently, on May 24, he was placed in judicial custody for four days. After this period, he was remanded back into police custody for an additional three days.

As the investigation progresses, the court’s decisions regarding custody and bail will play a crucial role in determining the next steps for both the prosecution and the defense.
