KOLKATA: Today(on 14th March),The North 24 Parganas district court in West Bengal has extended the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody of Shahjahan Sheikh, a controversial figure from Sandeshkhali, for an additional eight days. This decision highlights the continued legal scrutiny and investigations surrounding Sheikh, who is one of the area’s most contentious figures.

Background of the Case:

Shahjahan Sheikh, a notable figure in Sandeshkhali, was apprehended on February 29 following a 55-day evasion period amidst protests, predominantly led by women, over serious allegations including sexual misconduct and unlawful land dealings. The situation intensified on January 5 when a group allegedly associated with Sheikh assaulted an Enforcement Directorate team investigating a ration scam at his residence. Initially overseen by the state CID, the severity of the case prompted its transfer to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
